In the 21st century, phenomenon-based education has become crucial and mandatory for all human beings. Open and online mode of education has been increasingly adopted with its essence in the rapidly growing digital world. In the context of Nepal, Nepal Open University (NOU), a pioneer of open and online education, was established to provide quality and accessible higher education to all including those who are unable to approach the physical mode of education on campus.
Fulfilling the aims of open and online mode of education, NOU was established in 2016 as a fully government-funded university by the “Act of Nepal Open University 2073”. NOU offers diverse academic programmes through three faculties: Faculty of Social Sciences and Education, Faculty of Science, Health and Technology, and Faculty of Management and Law. The programmes include Diploma, Bachelor’s, Master’s, MPhil and PhD in various disciplines. Eligible students who have access to the Internet and computer can study and achieve higher degrees from their homes. NOU is in the ground of higher education as an option to conventional teaching and learning model that utilises modern technologies and pedagogies to equip students with essential digital skills and independent survival skills in the modern era.
Considering the geographical, social and cultural diversity of Nepal, NOU has promised to make higher education accessible to all including those who live in remote areas of the country. It has designed its courses to meet the needs of the globalised world and to integrate indigenous knowledge into mainstream education to contribute to local and national development. NOU is committed to building students’ love of wisdom to make their life more successful. The university has recruited highly qualified, skilled, and technocratic faculties to deliver designated courses effectively. Their contributions are always praiseworthy.
NOU has to go on a long journey to achieve all the stated vision, mission, goals and objectives. For which, we expect kind cooperation, suggestions and feedback from all stakeholders.
Finally, I extend my hearty welcome to all students at Nepal Open University!
