September 2, Lalitpur
To mark the 71st Commerce Day, the Faculty of Management & Law (FOML) at Nepal Open University, Lalitpur, organised its first FOML Faculty Research Dissemination and Discussion Programme. The event, chaired by Prof. Dr. Arhan Sthapit, Dean of the Faculty, featured presentations of recent research works by faculty members in the fields of commerce and management.
Drawing from his recent PhD research, Dr. Raj Kumar KC disseminated his findings on international trade and commerce by shedding light on the relationship between trade and foreign direct investment (FDI) vis-à-vis poverty alleviation incidents.
At the function, Dr. Rashesh Vaidya, PhD scholar Rupa Shrestha and Rosemary Joshi presented their research findings in various sectors of management and commerce, while Prof. Dr. Sthapit also disseminated several of his recent research works in management and education.
The event also featured a discussion on the research works presented, where participants provided critical comments and suggestions for improvement. Prof. Dr. Arhan Sthapit, who chaired the event, emphasised the importance of academic research in a university setting, stating, “Academic research and its dissemination should be at the forefront of our mission, making this research dissemination event the perfect way to honour Commerce Day.” He further highlighted the imperative need to promote academic research as a means to achieve academic excellence.
Commerce education in Nepal began with the introduction of the I.Com. (Intermediate in Commerce) degree at Trichandra College in 2011 BS (1953 AD). To honour this milestone, Commerce Day—also recognised as Commerce Education Day—is observed annually on Bhadra 17.
This year marked the second celebration of Commerce Day by the Nepal Open University (NOU). During the event, pioneer commerce educators Ishwori Lal Shrestha, Gopal Man Shrestha, Ram Prasad Rajbhahak, and Aishorya Lal Pradhananga were honoured with heartfelt respect for their contributions to the field. The programme, skilfully emceed by faculty member Rosemary Joshi, began with a warm welcome speech delivered by Naniram Sapkota, another member of the NOU management faculty.
